Freakier Friday (2025) ★★★½

Like the first one, only more complicated and frenetic. Entertaining as a series of funny bits and a decent payoff.

read: Final Orbit by Chris Hadfield ★★★★★
I love these thrillers set during the peak of the Space Race written by an actual astronaut. This third volume in the series does not disappoint, with a twisty mix of orbital and earthbound intrigue, realistic action and delightful hard science edge.
Bill's review of Final Orbit (Apollo Murders, #3)
5/5: I've been loving this series ever since the surprise discovery that one of my favorite astronauts had written a Cold War thriller set during the peak of the Space Race in the 1970s. This third vo...

read: Everyone a Stranger by Kevin O'Brien ★★★★

Clever WWII fiction set in Seattle. Kicks off with genuine tension, well-developed characters and setting; stalls; regains momentum for a strong finish. Most of the various resolutions were disarmingly clever and sometimes surprising.
Bill's review of Everyone a Stranger
4/5: I love historical fiction, especially set during WWII. I also love books set in Seattle. This checks those boxes and more. The story starts with some genuine tension, introducing rich and well-de...

Squanto: A Warrior’s Tale (1994) ★★★

The real story of Tisquatum (Squanto) is cloaked within a more imaginative tale that struggles to veer from cinematic conventions and tropes. Highlights are his life with the monks that rescued him and the climactic first thanksgiving meal.

The Fox and the Hound (1981) ★★½

Anthropomorphized woodland creatures dramatize friendship and loss. The tone relentlessly jumps from comic to cartoony to warm to tragic and back again. Tries to be Bambi and Lady and the Tramp at the same time without success.

Essential WWII viewing, even with the pragmatics of 1962 filmmaking. (Like these old guys making believe they’re American paratroopers.)

Joan of Arc (1948) ★★★½

Captures some of the essence of Joan & her impact, if not the true history & life. The film seems to try to rise above typical sword & swashbuckling of its time, but is still encumbered by mid-twentieth-century conventions & moralizing. I found it inspiring nonetheless.
