Yes, Nicholas Ray, the director of "Rebel Without a Cause", intentionally portrayed Sal Mineo's character, Plato, as a gay teenager. Although the film doesn't explicitly state Plato's sexuality, Ray's direction and Mineo's performance conveyed a clear suggestion of Plato's queerness.
