What proportion of the total income curve qualified for public housing? I doubt it was more than the bottom 10 or 15%. We need to provide for way more than that now.

Real world example. Nanaimo recently redeveloped its main downtown shopping street. They increased the sidewalk area but still dedicate 64% to driving and parking. Despite the fact that there are numerous large multi-story parkades within walking distance.

Nanaimo, BC: $2.75. Sunshine Coast, BC: $2.

Having said all that, it’s a good time to build more subsidized housing when prices are down.

IMO, when prices drop, that's a sign that the market is working not broken. Of course some developers are going to throw up their arms and complain. Don't cave! Ignore them. A different developer will come along and find a way to make it work. That's how competition works.

What proportion of total housing is currently subsidized? 5, 10, 15%? Unless public housing can meet the demand, say an additional 40%, it won't solve the housing crisis. It just displaces a different set of people (the lowest income group just above those that qualify for public housing).
December 5, 2025 at 7:39 AM
I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I don't think subsidized housing will ever be able to produce enough housing to meet the needs of the majority (we need it to provide for the lowest income households). At the end of the day its all about total amount of new floor space, public and private.

I don't really understand why developers in Vancouver suddenly can't make ends meet because rental rates (1-beds) dropped from $2400 a month to $2000, when rents in Edmonton and other cities are $1300 and they don't seem to be going out of business.

Turn them into UAVs that can launch 100 drones.

Is it organized by the city or a private enterprise?

Lots going on here. A Christmas Market may be rivalrous in the sense that consumption by one person interferes with that of another. Whereas a light show may be non-rivalrous and impossible to exclude consumers from. Then there’s the question of public vs. private sector provision.

Plenty to choose from:

I bought an old Apple iPod like this and put all 69 episodes of CBC The Signal with Laurie Brown on it and gave it to my nieces.

It makes sense but I'm sceptical about the extent to which that can be done in any reasonable time. Just the amount of ports and railroads what would have to be built is staggering. Where would all the investment come from? Pivoting heavily into services might be a good route.

Note that the effect wears off in second generation immigrants, who commit as much crime on average as the general population. Presumably they adopt the culture and norms of the society they were raised in.

Such incompetence/negligence is a plausible explanation, but with no doubt billions of $ resting on his early demise it does beg questions about whether something else was going on or why 2 FBI agents weren’t permanently assigned to monitor his custody.

New fast boat to Sechelt and Powell River? That’s what I’m hoping.
