Restore the Warp, my science fantasy ttrpg is out now! Fight interstellar invaders and heal the god of the stars. Fight for the worlds you love. Believe you will see them again.

Restore the Warp has 5 archetypes in the ashcan, but there are so many more good ones I'm saving for the full version.

Past a couple milestones on itch while away on vacation. 5000+ views, 2000+ downloads, 100+ followers.

Also 100+ downloads for Restore the Warp. I know some people have plans to play it, and excited for feedback once those games get going.

Pokémon World Championships this weekend!

You betting on Ice Horse or Shadow Horse? My gut is shadow, but I’m excited to see how top players try to counter it.

Restore the Warp is for the sickos.

You want a long move like this, with a whole 2nd page for your superpowers???

I'm also not counting pbta "descendants".

FitD, I love Scum & Villainy by @stras.bsky.social and @worldnamer.bsky.social

BoB, I love Galactic & Going Rogue by @rileyrethal.bsky.social and @jessfrom.online

Firebrands, I love Space Fam by @diceexploder.com

For this list, I'll disqualify games that CAN be run in space, if they're not explicitly designed for it.

So I'm ruling out stuff like Masks, Fellowship, Thirsty Sword Lesbians, and Armour Astir.

All great games, but different list.

Restore the Warp is my pbta space ttrpg. It's in good company.

I don't see the other pbta space games as competition, because they're all quite different. We all have cool things.

Lists are fun. Here's my Top 10! 🧵

I use "Communication Tools" rather than Safety Tools because of some posts by Meguey Baker. (Pic of a relevant section)

The idea of off ramps, different places to end your story, came from a few places, but I was probably thinking most about the narrative structure of Citizen Sleeper. Great game.

Just realized this line isn't on the itch version, but giving into the Starblade's Corruption can lead to your character becoming a villain, inspired by Urban Shadows.
August 5, 2025 at 5:15 PM
The Renegade's Thrills, inspired by the Beacon's Drives from Masks, has a few you can choose after you've already done 12.

These act like off ramps. Perhaps you DO stay that place you found.

All the characters have two "end moves" available in their Epiphanies (level up moves).

Blaze of Glory is the end from Conditions (stress feelings) while Across the Cosmos is the end from Dynamics (team feelings).

I'm enjoying the gameplay of Unicorn Overlord, but some of the character designs really make me roll my eyes.

Because in Restore the Warp, I give way more options for PC looks on a separate sheet. So I could fit the quick list for my main NPCs on the playbook equivalent.
July 30, 2025 at 3:17 PM
A lightbulb moment was realizing I could use the quick pick lists for looks that Apocalypse World established for playbooks.

Or the Exquisite Fae from Brinkwood by @erikthebearik.bsky.social! Early tests of Restore the Warp sometimes had players feeling aimless, unsure what to do.

An anchoring character that gave a theme and directions was helpful.
July 30, 2025 at 3:17 PM
I've mentioned Fellowship as a big inspiration a few times. I wanted something like the Overlord Bonds that connected players more deeply to a fleshed out Big Bad.

Things like:

____ killed someone important to me.
____ knows the detail of my previous defeat.

I love that Blades in the Dark by @johnharper.bsky.social, gives a little more info, and you can choose whether it's a positive or negative relationship.

"Marlane, a pugilist"

That's enough to build off! But I wanted bigger characters.
July 30, 2025 at 3:17 PM
In Masks, and a lot of pbta games, you're asked to make an NPC in your backstory. This builds the world and gives the GM things to work with.

But you don't get much support. You get a question like, "Who, outside the team, thinks you shouldn't be a hero?"

Players can struggle to answer.
July 30, 2025 at 3:17 PM
Another innovation I'm proud of in Restore the Warp is the Galactic Pillars.

Each character is tied to an important NPC.

Here's my inspirations and my tweaks to give it more life. 🧵

Early in working on my pbta space game, I found a dice system that made a pretty graph.

So why did I throw it away?
July 28, 2025 at 9:30 PM
From there, the moves and abilities help reinforce themes and let players choose certain details.

There are a lot of hooks, but as an example, a player's chosen personal item can say a lot about who their character is and the themes they want to play with.
July 24, 2025 at 2:37 PM
So the themes we're playing with are already pretty similar. How do we get people on board for the aesthetics?

Well, the first step is to choose some options for the villains. These suggest widely different tones and help get us on the same page.
July 24, 2025 at 2:37 PM
The moments that interest me show people striving, holding onto hope. The bigness of space is a metaphor for overwhelming problems, and for loneliness, the gaps between people.
July 24, 2025 at 2:37 PM
Restore the Warp has a wide range of touchstones--military, comedic, literary, superheroes...

How does this work? What do these stories have in common?
