I retired as the VP of a genetics company a few months ago. I also became a grandfather for the first time and that inspired me to write a kid's science book, Henry Discovers Gravity. I'm just finishing a second, Henry and the Dark Cloud.
I wish I could have said it this well. George Will in today's Washington Post:

'As flaccid as a boned fish, Donald Trump crumpled quicker than even Vladimir Putin probably anticipated. The former KGB agent currently indicted for war crimes felt no need to negotiate with the man-child.'

My Substack article this morning, rottendog.substack.com/p/its-still-..., is personal. I traveled to Iran often during the 1970s—enough to glimpse a nation of contrasts: brutal rule, vibrant science, educated men and women, science, and great food. I miss that Iran—and fear it may be gone forever.

I got a call this evening that the FBI was on the Martha's Vineyard ferry today looking for immigrants. If you've heard anything or you were there, please leave a comment.

BIG BEAUTIFUL HEIST

The sign said Pro-Worker Priorities. Block letters, white on red—like a campaign sticker slapped on a wrecking ball. A Trump aide placed it on the podium moments before the cameras rolled. No one mentioned the fine print.

"Yesterday evening after the daytime drone attack and explosions in the forest near the military base, a wild boar came into the city. This is in my city now, 12 drones, no casualties. We joke: that this is already a truce!" Read the story at rottendog.substack.com

They told the mayor to stand down. He stood in front of the gate instead. The federal agents didn’t just cuff a protester. They took a sitting mayor off the street like a trespasser.

Over the next few weeks, I'm going to be focusing my daily articles (Rottendog on Substack) on lesser-known individual stories of courage, people who showed initiative in ridding their country of an authoritarian dictator.

If you'd like to suggest a candidate for my digging, please reply.

In 1949, George Orwell wrote one of the greatest dystopian novels ever written, “Nineteen Eighty-Four”. It was a prediction of the consequences of “totalitarianism, mass repression, and repressive regimentation” on society. It got me wondering what Orwell would write if he were alive today.

They won’t call it a dictatorship at first. That’s the trick.

It starts with a little tightening of the press. By the time you realize it’s not about safety or efficiency—it’s control—it’s already too late to ask questions.

So here’s your personal action plan if you live in a country that tips.

My friend in Ukraine sent me this: "Yesterday evening after the daytime drone attack and explosions in the forest near the military base, animals began to be noticed in the city that had never entered the city before... a wild boar was probably scared by the explosions and came into the city."

If Democrats suggested actual actions that people can take, rather than just asking for donations, we might be able to get organized and regain our democracy.

Trump once said of his backers, “We got more money. We got more brains. We got nicer boats. We’re smarter than they are.” This March, when asked if he was concerned about the impact his 25% tariffs might have, he replied, “I couldn’t care less.”

Trump’s 2025 plan is a squeeze play: tariffs hike prices on everyday goods, while tax cuts lock in gains for the wealthy. The bottom 20% lose up to 9% of their income. The top 1% gain 8%. Wealth up, burden down.

Tariffs at the Checkout, Tax Cuts at the Top
The Trump administration’s 2025 economic agenda is quietly overhauling how the government raises money—and who ends up paying for it.
