A few years ago people on the right started calling progressives "leftists" to try to make us sound more extreme than we actually are. The term "leftist" used to mainly be used to describe far left extremists. Why are progressives accepting this label and using it to describe ourselves now?

Nobody is buying Schumer's reasoning that if the government did shut down that Trump could have massively accelerated Musk/doge's cuts and just never sent thousands more government employees back to work after the shutdown ended? I heard Schumer and David Brooks put this idea forward.
