Just looked up “dote”. Unlike its modern meaning, there’s a Middle English usage meaning “to talk or act foolishly”. This makes sense in the context of White’s observation - even though his barometer will have been correct, rather than his interpretation of it!

Indeed. It's not that these celestial objects are too small too see - but much too dim. The photographs we see aren't particularly high maginification, just massively enhanced in brightness, using very long exposures and image stacking techniques.

Yes, sadly the Festival is indeed expensive. The point I was making, though, is that opera should no longer be considered "elitist" when pop concert tickets are going for similar prices, as are premier sporting events

Went to see La Traviata during the Autumn series - central stalls seats were £62. So about 25% of the cost of a ticket to see “non-elitist” pop performers such as Taylor Swift or Oasis …
