In the few times that I have been asked to translate such ostensibly discretionary things for individuals, the general reaction is sticker-shock, even if the rate quoted is quite low compared to what I charge corporate clients.

I have sometimes seen an image of a torii on an road-facing or side wall of a building, in an attempt to prevent one of these problems. I guess the thought is that nobody would defile a torii, but I have seen some that are stained yellow, making the color orange rather than the usual red.

Probably more related to Trump's decision to exempt smartphones and other electronics is that there are numerous Trumpic sycophants who make huge amounts of wealth by manufacturing in China. I wonder what Trump & Co. will do if China attacks and annexes Taiwan and then nationalized TSMC.

Regarding dictionary use by translators meaning lack of skill, I have many dictionaries, but seldom use them— on or offline—perhaps once a month. That doesn’t mean I’m a good or bad translator; it means I’ve been at this a long time and, more significantly, it means I work with things I understand.
