When people talk about being “woke”, civ has been pushing the bounds of wokeness in gaming since the 90s. They haven’t always done it perfectly (looking at you Civ 6 and not having more Native American civs) but they have made that a core tenet of gameplay.

Harriet Tubman as a playable civ leader in Civ 7 continues this idea, and it makes some ppl mad and complaining that having Tubman as a leader doesn’t “fit” into the franchise. Or; having a black woman as a political leader for the US makes some yall uncomfortable
