The South Australian government, inadvertently or otherwise, is casting this as a natural catastrophe. It’s not, it is an unnatural catastrophe that is only going to get worse unless we do something about the cause.

And we know that this region is beginning to feel increased heat, drought and water stress. But on this we hear nothing, a great zone of silence.

The West Australian Premier also talked about the reputational risk of nuclear power to WA's agriculture, another bizarre argument. Why? Because the really big risks to WA's agriculture is global warming.

Limiting peak warming to 1.5° this century would reduce the risk of crossing tipping points the risks cannot be eliminated entirely.

If sufficient action is taken rapidly to limit peak warming to 1.5oC, or very close to it, the “ risk of triggering climate tipping points is reduced significantly”.

This study led by Jakob Deutloff with Hermann Held and Tim Lenton shows current policies globally - which will warm world by ~ 3°C - are “unsafe with regard to triggering climate tipping points” with a minimum of 9/16 climate tipping points being crossed with >50% likelihood.

This is very interesting - exactly the opposite situation in Australia where successive revisions of the inventory and projections for 2030/2035 make target achievement easier.

The @walabor government points to plans to phase out coal from Southwest grid by 2030, which is positive, but makes less of plans to keep massive amounts of gas in the system. To limit global warming to 1.5°C gas needs to be out of the power system soon.

Unlike the rest of Australia, emissions from fossil fuels and industry in Western Australia are rapidly growing mainly driven by the LNG export industry. The government like to say it's world leading but the only thing world lead leading might be the rate of emission increase.

The W.A. government also likes to say that gas is needed to phase out coal in Asia, which is also not true. The latest study to debunk this is by the US Department of Energy

Limiting global average warming to 1.5° is critical to give any chance of survival to our coral reefs - we know that through successive IPCC reports and the scientific work done and led by Australian scientists over decades.

Without further serious action, the world is headed towards at least 2.7° of warming which would be catastrophic.
