I'm utterly appalled by the position taken by the government. It is the most slippery of slopes when protest is rationed. I deplore the repeated far right protests in London and outside asylum hotels. But their right to protest is also my right to protest. No good can come from this approach.

This has the same vibe as the "citizens of nowhere" statement. I would usually support labour but this is just off the charts stupid and pandering to a socially conservative group that is not their natural constituency. Poor politics in my mind.

I remember Labour winning in 97 and thinking anything was possible. Then again at the opening of the London Olympics - we were on top of the world. Nothing since then.

Brit here. I wouldn't bet on us honouring the US in the future. This feels more permanent. If it carries on at this pace for four years there will be no going back. It just won't be worth the risk.

I think it will be impossible to ignore if/when Trump comes for the state visit. Could be very nasty!
March 9, 2025 at 6:37 PM
I'm from the UK and have to agree. I'm not sure we'll ever really trust you again. The US will struggle to get any support from many countries when you most need it. And earning our trust will be decades of work.

They are just such utter, graceless twats.
February 28, 2025 at 9:38 PM
Because they've backed themselves into so many corners they can't do anything. Increased tax for the better off makes complete sense.

Well said that man.

She wasn't on a political program was she? I'm pretty sure that was GBeebies...
February 18, 2025 at 6:18 PM
For God's sake. They have to start changing. The right wing press can whinge but the public overall are behind this. If Labour lose the youth vote they will never get it back. I can scarcely believe the position they are taking - it makes me want to scream..

People will vote for anything if you wrap it up in "they are the problem, those others over there" messaging. It's taken 8 years for the tide to begin to turn on Brexit. We can only hope that the speed with which the Tango Toddler screws everything up means voters cotton on sooner.

Unfortunately you're not teetering. You're just waiting until the inauguration. After that there is nothing you can do. Still cannot believe that's where the US is - so sorry for you.

That's sort of trickle down welfare isn't it. Guaranteed success.
January 12, 2025 at 10:09 AM
Not sure how that would play with the maga lot wanting isolation and security, having your biggest enemy on your doorstep.
January 8, 2025 at 7:44 PM
I well understand your fear and your concern ref Art 5. I think the key issue would be the message it sends to the rest of the world if the USA did that. Feels to me like bluster but i could be wrong. I think the impact of the invasion of a friendly neighbour would cause too many problems for them.

Because Iceland was considering it but didn't follow through.
January 8, 2025 at 3:25 PM
Apparently Iceland was going to invoke Article 5 during the Cod Wars with the UK. So I think the answer is yes.

The problem is our echo chamber gets smaller and the RW echo chamber gets much bigger. Who wins? Nowhere is there civilised debate.

Thoughts and prayers blah blah blah. It's not the guns it's the people blah blah blah. Right to bear arms etc etc.

One day it will be one too many shootings. But I bet that day is not today.

Loads of commefrom the USA but the UK has a similarly unenlightened approach. Under invest in all the social support systems that help those most in need and leave them to their own devices. The concept of social investment for the good of all seems to be lost.

Just wondering whether this is a stroke of genius. GOP/MAGA can choose to rage against it, but then how do they sell Trump pardoning himself. Or they accept the pardon without a word to allow the pardons from the income president, in which case Biden wins.
