I think if you think of it as a separate thing instead of faithful adaptation it's easier to do both? Like, I enjoyed the musical. I saw it after reading the book, but I also enjoyed the book. It's more like when they do a movie of a video game. A fair amount changes.

I think those are subjective opinions though. The last one maybe less so, but there are many people who DID enjoy and finish it.

I really liked the book, but it is WILDLY different from the musical and now the movie and, yeah, there's a lot that would not have made it to screen. It would be nice if they stopped whitewashing fiero though.
