Reading was always a struggle for me growing up (and I equated books to punishment or work) and then I read the Hobbit when I was, I think 20, and it changed my opinion on reading. It sounds so dumb now, but it's true.

Or... Possibly it's because it's what we're accustomed to? We have imperial and metric on food products and in our vehicles. It's easier to picture things that you're familiar with. I can visualize a foot in length. I can't easily visualize that in metric.

At least in this case it seems to be a problem of chronic mismanagement that is leading to this and not a story of a really successful or good game coming out and then the studio getting shut down.

Common ground could be not talking about politics or news. If there is nothing there other than politics and news, then sure, cut them off. I doubt this is the case.
