Here’s what’s happened: mars is too far from the Goldilocks zone, too thin an atmosphere, and no oxygen. Venus is WAY too close to the sun, sulfur clouds, and and absolutely hellish atmosphere. Nothing “bad” happened on either planet. They were inhospitable from the start.
