Here for the Soccer
Whitecaps free agents as usual mostly on options, but the GK situation is interesting. Takaoka is out of contract in December (not an MLS free agent for reasons) but basically the whole thing is wide open.

OMG THE GOAT's PLAYING

Tonight's been a great advertisement for my blog where I make educated guesses that pan out occasionally. bigshinyball.substack.com/p/vancouver-...

For the last five years MLS pundits have on average underestimated the Whitecaps by a little less than 2 positions (1.81). So based on this year's prediction (11.78) we should expect the Whitecaps to finish 10th (this is very scientific and important)

Another Halifax Tides announcement coming tomorrow

Best for last, Montreal has the most impressive signing for signing line up right now. All killer, no filler. Lambert has the least impressive resume only because she was a back up at Freiburg. If Pichon can keep this up they'll be a total menace.

Vancouver's pre-christmas roster blitz has got them a good defensive trio in Woeller, Young and MacAslan. Di Filippo is also a pretty exciting addition up top. I was a bit less impressed with Longhurst during her time with VWFC, but she was playing a pretty thankless CDM role.
January 1, 2025 at 7:23 PM
The Tides are another very sparse roster, so this formation is total guess work. Creighton seems a very odd 2nd signing for a team that went out on a limb to get a Canadian international with their first, but she is in a similar range to Soto or Stordy as NCAA stand outs.

The other more complete team, AFC Toronto. Very strong through the CBs and midfield. If they don't make another move up front this will be a real test of L1C's attacking talent relative to some of the leagues other teams have drawn from (notably Ireland in Calgary's case)
January 1, 2025 at 7:23 PM
On the more complete end of the spectrum Calgary could almost start a game. They'll need more wide players, Stordy is an exciting piece at fullback, but they need a left side equivalent. Only need to announce 0.7 players a week so they could relax their pace soon.
January 1, 2025 at 7:23 PM
Formations are very hypothetical, I've mostly tried to just fit in the players that have been signed, but I think its pretty obvious Ottawa will be lining up in a Colombian 2-3-5. They'll need to announce an average of 1.6 players a week to reach the minimum of 20 before kickoff.

And finally Michael D'Agostino. The presumptive interim D'Agostino did well when called upon during Sartini's suspensions and I guess he gets a point for being a Vancouver boy, but it'd feel unambition right?
November 25, 2024 at 8:39 PM
Tommy Whledon Jr. the only other CPL coach worth mentionning. He's fresh off a cup win, but I still feel like he's on the outside of this search. He's just so tied to Calgary soccer.
November 25, 2024 at 8:39 PM
Another Giovanni? Of the Savarese variety? He had a really good five year run with the Timbers, he's unemployed, he shows up and does analysis for Apple sometimes. He's not a bad choice, maybe not inspiring, but like two MLS Cup loses! That's way better than the 'Caps have ever done.
November 25, 2024 at 8:39 PM
Robin Fraser, most well known for an impressive 2020-21 seasons with the Rapids before he crashed out in 2023. But, he's certainly an interesting option given how weak that Rapids squad was, you've gotta wonder what he could do if given the group the Whitecaps have going into next year.
November 25, 2024 at 8:39 PM
Bobby Smyrniotis, an obvious choice for Canadian teams. Years of dominating the CPL, selling youth to Europe. Does Schuster trust him to do it at a higher level? Does Smyrniotis want to take a role where he's less likely to win trophies even if it is in MLS? Does he hold out for a TFC offer?
November 25, 2024 at 8:39 PM
Jim Curtin, the obvious first choice for basically any MLS team right now. He has a resume that does all the stuff that the Whitecaps want to do, but what do the Whitecaps really have to offer him? If Atlanta comes calling with the trademark Blank cheque, why would Curtin come here?

AFC Toronto announces the signing of Leah Pais. Very much the type of player the NSL was made for, an NCAA standout who didn't crack the NWSL.
