This is tough, so many great films that didn’t make my cut. #Filmsky 📽️

Just watched Hoosiers, for a dose of Gene Hackman. Well made, but falls into the sports movie trap of leaning into the wins. Losers are more interesting. #Filmsky 📽️

Finally got around to seeing 28 Days Later. I did not expect Cillian Murphy to go full Roy Batty at the end. #Filmsky 📽️

Jesse Lasky, Adolph Zuckor, Samuel Goldwyn, and Cecil B. DeMille; founders of Famous Players which would go on to become Paramount.

Just watched The Killers. Come for Lee Marvin being a classic badass, stay for Angie Dickinson cuckolding Ronald Reagan. A nasty good time.

Just watched My Old Ass. I totally get why gay people don’t like the story, the main character basically has to go hetero to find happiness. But the scene where Aubrey Plaza gets to hug Chad is an emotional nuke. #Filmsky 📽️

This is a terrible take, made worse by the fact that the NYT made it a pick. The Oscars originated because studios wanted to publicize the artistic merit of film, quite aside from the popular tastes of audiences.

Just watched Anora as part of my Oscar weekend binge. I feel like such a prude saying this, but I thought the sex was too much. You can accomplish telling the story of an evolving relationship (better) through acting, like Borisov does. Maybe the contrast is the point #Filmsky📽️

Just watched A Real Pain. Culkin pulls off the amazing dichotomy of being a likable jerk, a heavy lift. I appreciated the humor, but it’s tempered by a very weighty concentration camp scene.
March 2, 2025 at 2:21 PM
Just watched A Complete Unknown. Chalamet was terrific and I really enjoyed it, but it was more of an extended music video than a story. They really failed to build the drama of how big it was that Dylan went electric at Newport. #Filmsky 📽️

Just watched Rebel Without a Cause. Everyone focuses on James Dean, but it’s Jim Backus’ emasculated father that carries. He and Dean’s generation fell outside of the great WWII effort, and it left them feeling useless and adrift.

Just watched Major League. As a former sports journalist, I often find sports movies lacking. This is an odd one where they get the sports mostly right but the film pacing and storytelling are meh.

Just watched Becoming Led Zeppelin. Definitely strays in hagiography territory, but the music and story are so terrific it’s okay. IMAX made for a true Hammer of the Gods experience. #Filmsky 📽️

Just watched The Fall Guy. As a big movie person, I loved all the film references and behind the camera scenes. It suffers from invincible bad guy syndrome, but Gosling and Blunt are an easy watch.

Just watched Desire, part of the @criterion.bsky.social pre-code Columbia collection. It’s amazing what passed for racey in 1936, and I never appreciated how spot-on Madeline Kahn was in her impression of Dietrich singing!

Just watched Rolling Thunder, on Tarantino’s recommendation. Somewhat restrained for an AIP exploitation film, more of a classic Schrader character spiral. But the last 10 minutes delivers on the violence and nudity. Devane and TL Jones are both terrific.

Just watched The Player. Hadn’t seen it since ‘92 when I was 20. I remember not liking it, but with 30 more years of watching movies under my belt, I thought it was great. Always revisit films, you’re never the same person.

Finally got around to seeing John Wick. Honestly don’t get the fuss. Keanu is entertaining as always but the action sequences are just okay. The stormtrooper-level hail of bullets that all miss is a pet peeve of mine.

I have a strong memory of this production still, but could never remember what it was from. Thanks for the memory jog!

Just saw Nosferatu. I really like Eggers’ films, but I was a little disappointed in this one. Coppola did it better 30 years ago.

Wow, glad I caught this before it left Criterion. Powerful doc about porn legend Sharon Mitchell. When asked about the veracity of porn, she says “I don’t know how much of me is truth or fiction.”
