I’ve been pondering that myself. Perhaps if you just look at it in the most basic sense? The Reagan/Sanders comment reminded me of this.

I saw somewhere that the political spectrum is in the shape of a horseshoe. Far left and far right are more similar than the center. Lends credence to what you’re saying above.
