Seems sound! Keep in mind that an index fund consists of stocks and will go up and down. Many people panic-sell when there is a drop in the market and therefore lock in their losses. Overall, though, you will see growth. Since the great depression stocks have returned avg. ~10% per year.

Best advice I can give is index funds. Boring, regular index funds 90% of the time outperform a managed portfolio. Vanguard is well respected. Individual stocks is gambling, but if your comfortable with that then go for it, I have a few I own but I'm not betting the farm on them.
