We're in a transition period, between the democracy of the 20th Century, and the technocratic feudalism of the 21st. No Kings rallies aren't enough. The fact that seven million people marched and there wasn't a single "violent incident" is not bragworthy.

By the end of the movie, Sam is ready to take on the responsibility of CEO (of the very company he ruined a few hours earlier), now that he's made peace with his father and found a born-hot-yesterday girlfriend.

Let me show you what I mean.

In TRON: Legacy, the main character Sam (the son of Encom's founder) starts the movie off by hacking into his dad's company's server and releasing its new software for free to the whole world, causing the company's stock to plummet.

The real flaw with TRON: Ares is the same one at the core of each installment: it's a fantasy series where CEOs replace kings, and corporations replace kingdoms.

TRON is Ayn Randian techno-feudalism. So, it's hard to take the human stakes seriously.

Think "Iron Fist", but "cyber".

Ok, so... TRON: Ares...

Let me start with what I liked: the visuals and the music. This isn't surprising, since these two are the core strengths of the TRON franchise: it looks cool, it sounds cool.

NIN did a great job on the soundtrack, its tech/distortion matching the movie's themes.

Question: what exactly is the point of a ministry of foreign affairs if you’re not going to protect Canadians abroad? In what way are you “urging” Israel to do anything in regard to the Canadians they unlawfully arrested?

I’m currently reading Comimg Up Short, by Robert Reich (i.e Sam’s dad 😉)

He chronicles the gradual shift between “stakeholder capitalism” to “shareholder capitalism” to explain how we got to the sociopathic economy we have today.

But I think capitalism was always doomed to end up this way.

Both are excellently cast in the series. Individually in their roles, they bring a lot of comedy, drama and nuance to their respective characters.

I love Guzman playing up Gomez as goofy and supportive. And Zeta-Jones is charming as ever as Morticia.

I finished watching the first four episodes of Wednesday Season 2.

It's campy, it's fun, I'm enjoying it! I like that the rest of the Addams family has a bigger role to play, even as this is Wednesday's show.

But I have one critique, and it involves these two: Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzman.

The @nytimes.com 's treatment of @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social is absurd, but I've come to expect nonsense like this from them.

Is she interviewing Johnny Tightlips?

"Is the department currently incorporating into any military plans--"

"I don't know nothing. Who said we have a military?"

Sure. I’m not a great tattoo photographer, but here’s me and T’Challa, and the tattoo

@alexandermfreed.bsky.social I really enjoyed your book! I especially loved the conversation between Mon Mothma and Grand Vizier Mas Amedda, which really drives the point home that electoralism is ineffective against dictatorship.

Currently reading Star Wars Reign of the Empire, Mask of Fear.

It takes place some 10 or so years before the events of Andor.

I’m only a few chapters in, but I’m loving the contrast between Mon Mothma, hoping to vote away Palpatine’s power, vs Organa’s concern with justice for Jedi.

Obi-Wan was much maligned by fans for no good reason: it’s great, dont let them tell you otherwise. It’s set 10 years after the fall of the Republic and deals with themes of survivors guilt, healing, and loss of innocence.

The Bad Batch follows a group of spec ops clones right as the clone war ends and the Empire begins. They’re left adrift to attempt to rebuild their lives as fugitives, all while caring for their younger clone sister.

Like Andor, it has many bleak moments. But it’s also hopeful.
