Education like this is going to be extra underfunded with the upcoming proposed budget cuts. Community members like ourselves are already filling gaps but this will be unsustainable. Time to be quite insistent with council.

With the Guelph 2026 proposed $650,000 budget cut to winter bike lane maintenance is the strongest answer I’ve ever received.

Transportation makes up roughly 31% of Guelph’s community emissions. Every cyclist pushed back into a car by unplowed lanes, or pedestrian due to sidewalk maintenance adds to congestion and carbon output – moving us further from our Race to Zero climate goals.

they undermine safety, equity, accessibility, and Guelph’s climate and road-safety commitments.
Combined cuts to cycling/pedestrian services = $1.15 million (~35% of all $3.33M service reductions) for 2026. These are savings on paper but with high human and social costs.

We bought the equipment and now we're proposing not to use it! Every public engagement I ask about year round maintenance plans for future infrastructure.... If we have the budget set aside for it to meet minimum standards.

Me too - Woolwich only has one in each direction and I already do it regularly in the winter.
@taaguelph.bsky.social I've even held up a bus before! I try to pull over for people to pass when safe in the early mornings but sometimes it's not safe.
