The spring flowers keep coming. First photo is Jeffersonia diphylla which flowers only for a day or two each year. Then it grows leaves in the shape of a butterfly! #nativeplants

Across the street from me is lined with forsythias so last summer I planted a spicebush. Today was the first chance I got to determine that it is male! I'm at the very outer edge of spicebush swallowtail's range so hoping I get some to show up. There are 3 more in the backyard. #nativeplants

For half the year my morning bike commute happens in the dark, but civil twilight now starts about 10 minutes before I depart, long enough to just pause for a couple minutes and hang with the plants. Here is the bloodroot coming up, and the sunrise on East St about 5 minutes later. #bikecommute

A lot of my native ephemerals are getting ready to bloom, but this year's winner is tiny little Meadow-rue. It came out two weeks earlier than last year. If pussy willow also counts, the catkins just turned green and I assume have begun offering pollen to any early bees. #nativeplants

Found what I think is a baby firefly under some leaves today. I tucked it back in. Leave the leaves may be working after all!I wasn't sure if it was actually making much difference in my yard. Also happy to see that my bloodroot and other ephemerals are on their way up. #nativeplants

Three bikes parked at once at the Big Y to get groceries, in February. Usually there is at least one. To encourage new riders, has anyone ever organized a group ride to the grocery store (a "buy in")? I could bring extra baskets and panniers, and we could teach hand signals. #pittsfieldma
