The Baldegg Convent (1968-72) in Hochdorf, Switzerland, by Marcel Breuer, Robert F. Gatje & Beat Jordi. Photo by Jürgen Beck from the book “Im Kloster Baldegg - Klösterliches Leben in einem Bau von Marcel Breuer”.

Late last year Marcel Breuer’s only religious building outside the US was honored by an extensive monograph published by Scheidegger & Spiess. A fantastic book that provides deep insights into the genesis of the Baldegg convent and the life going on behind its walls.

My all time favorite architect biography for sure is Francis Strauven’s “Aldo van Eyck - Relativiteit een Verbeelding” from 1994, a dense and truly fascinating tour through Van Eyck’s life, work and thinking.

The Steiger House (1956-58) in Zurich is the brainchild of Flora Steiger-Crawford and Rudolf Steiger. Lars Muller Publishers recently released Marianne Burkhalter & Christian Sumi’s present beautiful and very informative book about the house that I greatly enjoyed.

I deeply admire Alvar Aalto’s (and thus also Aino & Elissa’s) architecture in general but his houses always fascinated me the most. Hence, issue 606 of A+U with its beautiful documentation of the houses and their architectural details is one I treasure.

A great choice for the 2025 Pritzker Prize: Liu Jiakun. He’s not only designing beautiful antidotes to the usual bombast in China but also has three stray cats in his office.

A brilliant biography by Sonja Hilzinger of the great Grete Ring, art historian and art dealer during the Weimar Republic and in British exile. Recently published by Reimer Verlag.

I recently came across an old book featuring modern churches in all of Europe, many of them photographed by Barbara Schmidt-Glassner whose name I never had heard before. But her photographs are excellent as the present one of St. Fronleichnam in Aachen, Germany, shows.
