Antwerp is also a bit of a micromobility nirvana with numerous operators. The city has designated formal ‘drop zones’ for dockless eScooters and eBikes as well as the city’s own ‘Velo’ docked bike share scheme with a high density of docking stations.

Maybe more interesting is Antwerp’s underground pre-metro system which consists of 13km of tunnel and 19 underground stations. The trams then rise up to surface level beyond the core.

Newer trams only have one cab, which means there is a large window on the rear of the tram. This also means there are turning circles at the end of lines.

Antwerp also has an extensive tram network using a mix of older and newer vehicles. One unique feature is shared bus and tram stops.

Beneath the historic facade, canopy and platforms are two levels of underground platforms completed in 2007. These facilitate through high speed trains to the Netherlands. As well as a modern concourse and retail precinct.

Antwerpen Centraal Station is a spectacular arrival point to Antwerp. They don’t call it the “railroad cathedral” for nothing.

Above and beyond great sustainable transport and transit Ghent is a beautiful city too.

The tracks (and trams) are quite narrow only about 1.4m with vehicles 2.4m - compared to Melbourne’s 1.6m and 2.9m vehicles.

There’s also heaps of cyclists in Ghent with a lot of cycling along tram lines!

One peculiar practice in Ghent is the use of passive tram boom gates where the tram itself physically pushes the gate open as it passes through. Designed to filter out vehicles from tram only road segments.

Ghent also has an extensive tram network which converges in the historic centre of the town.

The amount of bike parking at Ghent station is quite unimaginable to an Aussie. Something like 17,000 spaces across 3-4 major clusters. All different types too: indoors, outdoors, underground, secure, spaces for cargo bikes.

Ghent station in Belgium. One of the busiest stations on SNCB’s network. With about 45,000 passengers a day and thousands of bike parking spaces. Currently undergoing a major upgrade.

I do not believe people who claim to have listened to Paul Kelly with their family as a child - why weren’t you listening to ABBA or The Big Chill soundtrack like a normal family?
