The most frustrating part of my entire career in public service are the people wanting to sit in the big chair but won't carry the weight. When you get to make the call it also means it's all on you. And asking for solutions we all know you won't implement is not a decision.

One of my father's many disappointments as a professor came in his last several years when his peers' response to his efforts to get adjuncts rights or tenure was feigned ignorance, shrugs, or to be distracted by academic baubles. And he retired c. 2002. Gotta be awful now.
