Me, too. I switched to Tidal for music and Podbean for podcasts. Tidal pays its artists much better. And you get 5 Tidal family accounts for the same cost as 2 Spotify accounts.

No one person can do it all, but if we each choose a few things that we ARE able to do we CAN push back authoritarianism and fascism. Above all, appreciate all efforts, no matter how small, and encourage those who are just starting to engage rather than berating them for doing too little.

Host an event with a local candidate who shares your beliefs. Protest outside of an ICE detention center. Learn about which political condidates the businesses you frequent support, and shop elsewhere if you feel you need to.

Donate an hour phone banking or writing postcards. Contact your state and federal elected officials often about the votes you want them to make. Share your actions on social media to inspire others. Offer to help with the next protest as a marshal, videographer, water carrier, etc.

Will protests alone create the change we want? No. But they have their role to play. If you attended a #NoKings event yesterday, thank you! And I challenge you to continue the work by taking a next step. Stay informed about what your local town/city council and school committee are voting on.

*The spectacle of millions of potential customers in the streets sends a signal to companies that allying with Trumpis bad for business Target felt the sting of an ongoing boycott led by pastor Jamal Bryant (33% loss of stock value, sales and foot traffic down for each of the last 7 months).

*A protest is a first step toward more individual actions. Groups hand out flyers about local activism and community support. A compliment to the lady with a cool sign leads to an invitation to the phone bank she runs. Canvassers get hundreds of signatures in support of a ballot measure fast.

*Protests bring together people who otherwise would not have encountered one another, thereby building a network of community activists. When I attended my first protest this spring I learned about the @gain-indivisible.bsky.social & joined their mailing list. They keep me informed.

*Mass gatherings show that we haven't lost hope & there are a LOT of us who want change. @hcrichardson.bsky.social quoted Justin (via Mother Jones): “You know…a lot of times I have a hopeless feeling, but…being out here today just reminds me about the beauty of America and American protests."

But for those on the left who genuinely believe this, I offer these thoughts:

The critics usually argued that protests give people the illusion that they're helping, but they don't actually cause change. At least some of these comments are probably coming from bots and Trump regime sympathizers who want to discourage dissent.
