Routed West @bampfa.bsky.social is stunning & worth the visit. I’d already planned to go but happened to meet one of the quilters leaving a coffee shop a few days before. She told me “look for the red cardinals” (her quilt) next to her grandmother’s (age 109) & great aunt’s quilts. Very memorable—

Ailey week! finding free (2024) & treading (1979) were amazing, both bay area premieres. Revelations (1960) gets me every time. The company dedicated their Cal residency to Judith Jamison. Don’t think there was a dry eye in the house. Might stir something hopeful for you too youtu.be/kDXerubF4I4?...

In International Studies Quarterly, @kseniyaoksamytna.bsky.social & Billerbeck develop a concept of racialized IOs that operates in light of macro/micro pressures from states & employees. Support from semi-structured interviews w current/ former UN officials, archives, & UN records/staff statistics.

In Critical Studies on Terrorism, Abu-Bakare constructs a postcolonial theory-based analysis of CTS that critiques its orientation towards conventional terrorism knowledge. Features Fanon & Shilliam, as well as Mill’s concept of white supremacy as an international system of formal/informal rule.

Bautista-Chavez et. al. forge new inquiry into the relationships btwn race and migration in a 2024 International Migration Review. Enthoracial hierarchies, as they operate in the politics of migration, motivate a pivot from static models of inequality to models capable of explaining power relations.

Does racism persist in global mobility rights? In International Studies Quarterly, Rosenberg uses new data on bilateral visa waiver policies to show that racial difference predicts whether a country receives a visa waiver, evidence of systematic racial discrimination in international visa policy.

In recent iojournal.bsky.social, obrown.bsky.social theorizes race and international order by articulating both as processes of regulation and regularization. Race, so conceptualized, helps us understand how order remains racialized and racializing across contexts and areas. Really fantastic piece.

It was great to have a research workshop on paths forward for the empirical study of race in IR with Robbie Shilliam and friends at #ISA2025! We selected published works & working papers that make conceptual or methods contributions to this yet developing field of inquiry. See some papers below 🧵

This was really fantastic! Went to see the Berkeley symphony and ballet collaboration. I loved the showcasing of local composers and the performers’ use of Rumi’s dance poem—a respite for the heart given all the unbelievable things happening rn.

Below, I argue that American racial order shapes jurisdiction over US troops on host soil.
