I carry a lot of things just in case: Advil, pens, tampons, a mental list of everyone I’ve ever met’s likes and dislikes and birthdays. I have eyes in the back of my head, so I carry Refresh drops (the kind without preservatives) to keep them sharp. I carry mace and a pink keychain shaped like a cat that doubles as a weapon. I carry 10 almonds, which my mom taught me is a whole meal. I carry a certificate I won in third grade for being “The Most Well Behaved.” Oh, did I mention I have a tail? A monkey tail, not a dog tail. So I can catch my younger sister when she falls and carry more things. I carry a few wadded-up plastic bags with me when I go out just in case someone drinks too much and needs a place to puke. I carry sunscreen and chapstick (the kind with sunscreen) and nail polish. A homing pigeon roosts in my hair. She carries letters and the whole world’s misjudgment, so the least I can do is carry her eggs in the nest of my curls. I carry band aids in case someone scrapes a knee or gets their heart broken. I carry an extra set of thumbs to help friends craft kind but firm texts to lovers who don’t deserve them. I wear a halo most days, and it’s getting heavy — my head throbs and my neck buckles under its weight — but don’t worry, I carry a neck brace with me, too, just in case. I’m nothing if not prepared.
