I went to check on whether the book I wrote about the Navy's first female fliers, "Wings of Gold." was still listed on the Navy's website. I found this. The histories of six pioneering military pilots erased. This is not ok. #navalaviation #womenshistorymonth

OTD in 1973: The Navy’s first civilian female naval aviator candidates report to Women’s Officer School, Newport, RI: Ens. Joellen Drag (Oslund); Ens. Rosemary Merims Conatser (Mariner), who in 1990 will become the 1st woman to command an aviation squadron; Ens. Ana Maria Scott.

OTD in 1991: Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield begins. Though women are banned from combat, VAQ-34, a tactical electronic warfare squadron commanded by Cmdr. Rosemary Mariner, trains 7 battle groups to prepare male fighter pilots for combat. She is presented with the Meritorious Service Medal.

Recent pushback to women in combat is the same old argument used against the WASP and other servicewomen after World War II; the first women in U.S. military flight training in the '70s; and the women seeking combat status for duty they were already performing in the '90s.
