You might be correct on that, and for sure historically speaking (crusades, inquisition) it has been abused that way.

No they do not. Fantasy, myths have their place, to be sure, but they are not reality. The sole purpose of religion is to control human beings. Period. End of story. If you cannot be a decent human being without the threat of hell then you are not a decent human being.
