Public School (middle) art teacher and artist so yes it’s true I don’t have time to post a lot of stuff. I’m concerned for my students and their futures.
Framed & ready for the show. I pasted it to an Ampersand panel & covered in a matte medium finish

Adding the last color is always surprising

I look at the western sky every day just after sunrise as I walk in to work.

A nice surprise for me this morning. This is the view coming up from the gym stairs. ❤️❤️

Three very exciting boards. Any minute/day now they will hang up my mosaic.

If I’d made a coffee mug this pretty in 8th grade I might be a potter now. Look at that bold glaze combo- S&C dandelion with Sapphire Float. Pic 2 is about half of the rest. A successful thing,

Pretty much done. Darker grout stains makes a difference. I’ll just touch up and re-stain the frame then get it hung up

Left, border without stain. Right, stained by 8th grader. I’m not sure if I like it or if we need to go darker, which was her idea in the first place but I liked the lighter test piece.

Good grout stain is like magic

Today my 7-8 graders did a great job helping clean the grout out of words & texture, until the 7th hour boys thought I meant “remove the grout from between the tiles”. I stopped them before too much damage was done, it will just add a day of re-doing and touch ups. Otherwise we are ready for stain.

Grouting. I did the landscape and some 8th graders are doing the border tiles.

I was pretty disappointed with the gold bird yesterday. I free-handed the other 100+ birds, but this one was “important” so I made a stencil. I scrubbed the smudges off w Barkeeper’s and tried again. I think I’m about 2 weeks out from completion

Lusters are a leap of faith for me. The top has one gold bird and a few “blue storm” ones, but then today I added loads in “mother of pearl” that, once fired, should be transparent, but iridescent. My hope is that, all together, they’ll seem to appear and disappear as you walk past

I realize I could slightly rearrange the border tiles probably forever. I have two more to fire, plus the dedication tile

The frame allows for one more slightly narrower row of tiles, so we gradually are getting more made in bits of spare time

I usually have a few kids come hang out in my room on their recess break before lunch, sometimes to work on projects or just to be in a quiet space for a few minutes. Yesterday they moved the tiles from the desks to the support frame for me.

Everybody tagged the back of the panel yesterday, “keep the group small” was a new one to me. I was told it meant to have real friends not fake friends.

Started letting the kids tag the back of the mural panel today

Added a few green luster cedar trees and got it all in the kiln to fire tomorrow

Today was the hanging of our state middle school art show. A drop in the bucket, I know, but it matters to me. Just showcasing kids’ personal creativity. A little show, about 85 pieces, most of the kids won’t see it themselves, but they’ll see photos of it.
