'Through the Windscreen.' (1929) Gertrude Hermes was a printmaker and sculptor, who was one of the leading figures in the revival of wood engraving in the early 20thC. This work shows the night-time view of a tree-lined road lit up by the headlights of a car.

Ethelbert White painted a number of pictures of canals and narrowboats between 1919 and 1921; this is the Regent's Canal in London. White was living in Camden at the time and, like his friend David Bomberg, had painted an earlier series of barges at Rotherhithe and Wapping.

Ruskin Spear looked to Spencer Gore's 'From a Window in the Hampstead Road,' (1911) as an inspiration for this work from around 1955. The construction of a window pane in front of the window's view appealed to Spear; it was a motif to which he returned on several occasions.

This is among a group of powerful seascapes made by Leon Spilliaert in the 1920s, works in which the sea sometimes takes on an almost abstract quality and shows his interest in light effects and nuances of colour, with a human presence signified only by distant yacht.

'On the Shelf.' (1961) Eliot Hodgkin often cited Jean Siméon Chardin as his influence in still lifes, and like the French artist, Hodgkin succeeds in giving the most mundane of objects poetic form and painterly equilibrium.
