The Common App opened this past weekend. Any other senior-year parents out there like me? I’m staring down making TWO tuition payments at this time next year. I dug into how squeezed families are by the cost of college for @marketwatch.com
Parents are draining retirement accounts and home equity to pay for college. They should do this instead.
Sallie Mae says the average amount taken out in home-equity loans, retirement withdrawals and credit cards all jumped in 2025.

Went out to dinner last night and left my teenagers home alone. Did they party? Make a mess? No, they rescued a hurt pigeon they found when they were walking the dog. It flew off this morning, before I had to drive 45 minutes to a bird rescue.
