Musk's influence put Trump over the top. He poured a quarter of a *billion* dollars into supporting Trump. He bought ads in swing states saying contradictory that pandered to that specific state's fears and ads that looked like Harris' campaign, but weren't. In short, he manipulated voters.

It serves at least two purposes. First, it makes supporters of these policies feel like the government is doing tons of deportations -- far more than it actually is, which may make them feel vindciated in their vote for this government and continue to lend their support to it.
