Wondering whose White House job it is to protect Americans from bio threats - and why that matters? As of this week, it is *nobody's* full-time job. Here is what that means for all of us. Thanks to Jon Finer & @spsaki.bsky.social who lay it out with me here: www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...
No One in the White House Knows How to Stop Ebola
We had a playbook for handling biothreats. Then Trump pushed out the people who knew how to use it.

Thrilled to author with @bhadeliamd.bsky.social, @craigspencer.bsky.social as we try to make sense of the landscape and chart a safer, more secure future, including for all Americans, from bio threats. Our conclusion? Ensuring U.S. pandemic security requires strategic global engagement, not retreat.

Taking a sledgehammer to HHS is dangerous. In @justsecurity.org me & @spsaki.bsky.social write about why cutting, changing, and chaotically destabilizing a critical part of our nation’s biodefense isn’t smart for national security, and it weakens our biological deterrence. 🧵
What Just Happened:

Top experts write on exactly why the Trump administration's sweeping changes to HHS will make the United States highly insecure, not healthy.

Plus what indicators to keep an eye on in coming weeks and months.

Today, I found hope in hundreds who came out to celebrate the heroes who protect Americans from disease threats and fragility. After being locked out of their offices for weeks, they were finally allowed back in scheduled increments to box up personal items, family photos, and spare clothing. 🧵

Our protective shield against deadly diseases is falling apart. We haven't had Ebola in America in a decade. That's because Congress supported USAID and CDC to: (1) protect our homeland from deadly disease (2) stop outbreaks at the source (3) make sure our military doesn't have to go into hot zones.
Uganda's Ebola outbreak has worsened — but the country’s ability to fight it has been severely weakened by the Trump administration’s freeze on foreign assistance, per recording of US officials obtained by @lattif.bsky.social @stephanienolen.bsky.social.

Eye-catching + worrying scoop.
As Ebola Spreads in Uganda, Trump Aid Freeze Hinders Effort to Contain It, U.S. Officials Fear
Two more people are reported dead from the disease, and dozens are in isolation, as the outbreak grows.

USAID global health security people & programs = America’s fighting force against Ebola. That force is being terminated. The # of Ebola cases in America since a bipartisan Congress souped up the effort in 2015? Zero. Do most Americans want to keep it that way? Yes. Let’s get them back to work.
Elon Musk said DOGE made a mistake by cutting USAID’s Ebola prevention but it had been “restored.”

That’s not true, current and former officials told me and @johnphudson.bsky.social.

“There have been no efforts to ‘turn on’” Ebola prevention, said Nidhi Bouri, who oversaw team until January.
Musk claims DOGE ‘restored’ Ebola prevention effort. Officials disagree.
USAID’s initiatives to fight Ebola and other diseases have been gutted, current and former agency officials said.

Rubio claims that @USAID lifesaving assistance for health and humanitarian needs will continue. But his team just communicated that the entire agency will be imminently reduced from 14,000 to 294 people. Just 12 in Africa.

There have been 12 outbreaks of Ebola or Marburg (a close cousin) in the past 4 years

Zero have landed in the US

Why?

Because of people like Stephanie Psaki and a US deeply engaged in the world

So Stephanie asks

Who is protecting Americans from Marburg now?

Who is protecting Americans from Marburg right now?
The WHO and the CDC coordinated well when faced with viral outbreaks. This is no time to demolish a well-oiled machine.
