The Treasury has some systems that are 50+ years old. That makes integrating with newer systems, including ASAP, more challenging.

Having a dedicated team will let those systems improve without breaking anything, interrupting service, or rewriting things just for the heck of it.

That happens every month, so it will save money if it is easy.

States can handle their side of things (though building open software any state can run could save us a lot of money.)

The issue is likely the Treasury’s ASAP system. I will make sure there is a team available to improve it.

I have former coworkers who worked for USDS and 18F. People have made progress, even without the support they need from lawmakers.

I’m not saying it will be easy, but I will boldly say it is possible. Until we expect better, people will keep getting away doing things badly.

Though it isn’t just a matter of age. Young people working in politics didn’t get those jobs because they understand how transistors work.

Building infrastructure & good software takes time, absolutely. We have suffered because government contracting is a terrible and expensive way to get software.

But we should expect better.

Simple problems get fixed quickly. What is left are absolutely hard, complex problems that involve both technology and people.

But even those can be solved.

My job is fixing problems companies think are impossible to fix. I do it by collaborating, and taking one step at a time.

We had 18F! It was doing that! Direct File was awesome!

Then Musk killed it. It didn’t let him send tax dollars and our personal data to his companies.

Elon is very talented at raising money and making himself rich. He is incompetent at building software & hired literal teenagers.

Modern software engineering tools are the only reason they have managed to (illegally) steal as much of our data as they have.
