"Nathan is one of the UK's clean heat leaders" Chris Stark

I help people understand heat & heating industry. My family have been installing heat pump technology for nearly half a century. I run the Guild of Master Heat Engineers

BetaTeach.co.uk
I was with @janrosenow.bsky.social at this event at the house of commens terrace pavilion. It's a glass fronted Marquee heated with heat pumps. Heat pumps have been heating UK buildings before this country got it's first shipment of Methane in 1959

Yes, that's in my home city. My friend worked at City Engineering where John Sumner (who built that system) worked for a time. My own family have been installing for nearly half a century. We do acoustic sensitive stuff (e.g. famous recording stations etc)

Had a good night at the @octopus.energy event

Got to chat to @gjuk.bsky.social

👉Same height
👉Same age
👉Same love of heat pumps

Hi Chris and thanks @henrypelly.bsky.social for tagging me into the post.

1928 I believe. We then had John Sumner installing stuff 1945 onwards as well as Miriam Violet Griffith.

UK quickly became European leaders in commercial heat pumps

When it comes to electrifying the heat of commercial buildings (air conditioning does the heating too) UK ARE THE LEADERS

There's a balance yes. Arguably, in some cases it's easier to increase the sink (which decreases primary energy used) than trying to reduce primary energy with slowing heat loss.

I see you like bees/trees 😍
The tree a played in from 7yrsold as fallen this month 😭

Good points from @acjsissons.bsky.social on a good question from @adambell.bsky.social

Heat pump tech is an well established market. Just been in station which is heated with heat pumps, for obvs reason. All these "things" inside use heat pump tech. Estimates of 5 billion compressors on the planet

Spot on Anne, A2A systems are everywhere. My family have been installing them for nearly half a century. Mainly acoustic sensitive stuff e.g. we just replaced the system we first installed for Dave Gilmore (Pink Floyd) in 86 for new studio owners. Andrew is actually an A2A fan too

UNDERFLOOR CONFUSION

The recent test report from Energy House at @salforduni.bsky.social is possibly causing confusion.

Just 2 radiators (1 upstairs, 1 down) could heat the whole Barrett house with low temperature. Yet it seems the UFH industry are suggesting radiators will be problematic
December 12, 2024 at 8:39 PM
HOW QUICK IS YOUR RADIATOR

It's worth remembering that power (measured in Watts) has seconds built in.

Heat moves out of a home at different speeds (insulated or not)

The driving force of heat into a home is the difference in temperature between room temperature & the MWT inside the radiator 1/

2) so with things like heat pumps, they are actually much older technology than the UKs first natural gas boilers. And heat hundreds of thousands of buildings already.

We didn't have NG here till the first Methane ship docked at Canvey Island in 1959. First HP went in in 1928... 2/

Remember, heat requirements of a room (how fast it needs heat) constantly change. Because outside temperature constantly changes.

If a room needed 600 watts (650 Joules of heat per second) when outside temperature is 9°C The room would only need 300 Watts when outside temp was 15°C

Here is the 2nd Video discussing how the catalogue power rating of a radiator is the power the radiator will have when there is a difference of 50° between a room temperature of 20°C and a mean water temperature (MWT) of 70°C. MWT= the temperature in-between the flow and return temperature

RADIATORS CONFUSE PEOPLE

here is a video series to help people understand the science

WORTH noting that new (uninsulated) homes built in the 1960s had single panel radiators which did not need a flow temperature above 55°C on an average day of winter (e.g. 9°C outside)

They are not as bad as you think, please trust me. I've done a lot of heat loss calculations 😉 I was back here last month to replace the heat pump system we installed for Pink Floyd's guitarist back in 86... For new studio owners. Which brings me back to my post... people don't understand heat😉
December 8, 2024 at 2:02 AM
It may interest you @davidwardsays.bsky.social to learn that heat pumps are everywhere heating UK buildings, what do you think heats petrol stations? They first started to be installed in 1928. We didn't have natural gas boilers in the UK till the 60s...Heat pumps heat posh marquees for MPs😉
December 8, 2024 at 1:56 AM
I think you mean 17,000 kWh...
That's OFGEMs average gas usage per annum for an average 5 bed house. But that's usage and different to heat loss.

One of the things people are struggling with is the difference between temperature and heat. They are different things.
December 8, 2024 at 1:51 AM
Hi @davidwardsays.bsky.social I still don't understand why you believe the home was not an ordinary home?

As a bit of fun, we installed the heat pump system in here for Annie Lenox a few decades back... Many artists have recorded here e.g. Adele... How much SWI would it need and cost?
December 8, 2024 at 1:27 AM
Some clever people in retrofit but they battle with the majority.

MUCH OF RETROFIT IS WRONG

➡️2 very well insulated homes.

✅Top row represents a situation where there was good understanding that heat in is just as important as heat out

❌ Bottom row represents most SHDF HUG and ECO work
