i think we're in a position now where the vast majority of people are flat-out hostile to criticism. I've even seen other critics -people you would think would be resistant to this - become very nasty when something they like is criticised, because it's their identity too. none of us are immune.

Our identities have been forcibly tied to the products we consume in such a way that the people manufacturing them has successfully convinced pretty much everyone that criticism is an attack on the product, which is by extension an attack on you, and therefore critics exist only to hurt you

not even getting into 'obviously the franchise should pivot away from shit that clearly isn't fucking working' the genre you're in changes how money must be spent which changes how the story has to be structured and presented. You cannot seperate these two ideas
