Australian supermarket industry is so concentrated it is unappealing for most international players, byproduct of this is Australian ownership. Whether this offsets unfavourable pricing strategies for shoppers is opinion, families doing it hard at the moment so hopefully pricing practices change

Metcash are listed on ASX with split between retail and institutional funds approximately 50/50

I left industry about the time Franklins broke up, but I think Foodworks are an independent banner group that draw stock from Metcash. They are not aligned to IGA, but owned by AUR. Think of IGA and Foodworks as front ends and Metcash as backend.

With breakup of Franklins supermarkets, Woolworths acquired around 70, Coles about 40, IGA initially 100 or so, Pick n Pack & FAL maybe 50 each, some closed. Pick n Pak & FAL ultimately went to Metcash eventually and branded IGA. A bit messier than that but thats how I recall it.
