I'll be giving a talk at Uni Penn, USA, in April 2026 on compositionality in bonobos. Happy to (somehow) offset the carbon footprint of my trip by giving a talk at another university close to the US East Coast. Feel free to email me if you're interested!

We used methods from linguistics to map the calls and their combinations into a "bonobo semantic space", where vocalisations emitted in a similar context would have a similar meaning and thus, would be close in space.

Pet #primates on social media: the reality behind the screen
The psychological harms inflicted on animals are not always obvious, it's important to not only look for obvious or direct signs of animal suffering, but also consider how these animals are treated

The entire references can be found in the bibliography of the article - yep I know, it's a bit confusing...! 😅

This video made my day 😍

My job as a reviewer?
-Correcting typos ✏️
-Asking for clarifications 💭
-Begging authors to stop using the terms "New World monkeys" and "Old World monkeys" 🙊

Hi Bluesky!
I'm new here, but I spent some time on Twitter before as @BerthetMelissa.

I am a postdoc working on animal communication, and I'm currently studying the syntax and semantics of wild bonobos. In other words, I'm studying how bonobos combine calls into sentences and what those calls mean!
