Video of me shooting these. Since the focus ring is locked to the tripod (while only the camera body and lens spin), the level of focus/out of focus is correlated to the angle of spin. Notice the red light to see how long my exposures are.

Often when i shot with my digital camera, i would keep everything including focus on manual, simply because i enjoyed having full control of what is happening
