(8/8) Thank you John Sterling for being the voice of my childhood summers when I'd be glued to the radio (we didn't have cable), scoring along in my notebook, and cheering on Don Mattingly and some bad Yankee teams. Congratulations on your retirement!

(7/8) And of course, that voice. Voices like Mel Allen's, Vin Scully's, Jon Miller's are more stereotypically "BASEBALL", but John's voice was and still is one of a kind. It's musical, it's booming, it's operatic. It was made for radio.

(6/8) (Shout out to Bob Uecker's "get up, get up, get outta here, gone", but Bob hedges and only goes into it when he's sure the ball's gonna go, and he only does it for Brewer HRs)

(5/8) His signature high-far-gone HR call is the best HR call of all time, by A LOT. It's musical and it matches the energy of watching a deep fly ball live. Everyone would complain about the times he'd go high-far... CAUGHT... but that's part of what made it great.

(4/8) I used to listen to his post-game shows where he'd take calls from fans, and any time one of them was being a clown, John would hang up on them and call them out for being a clown. It was hilarious

(3/8) He was sharp and opinionated, not inundating us with the usual empty platitudes and adages, instead always telling us how he felt about the state of the game, players, etc. He taught me how to be the educated, die-hard, *perfect* baseball fan that I am

(2/8) He wasn't an insufferable homer; he got excited for every exciting thing that happened during a game - but just a bit more excited for the Yankees. Which is how it should be. He was fair, talking up the other team and calling out the Yankees when they deserved it
