That’s the rub, they’ll lather “interfering with law enforcement” over anything to justify it, but it seems mostly irrelevant since there is no real civ remedy anyway, and they don’t charge most of them so it can’t be tossed for 4th amendment violations

Suspicion that citizens are or have committed an offense against the US. That said, there’s no civil remedy for a 4th amendment search and seizure violation, just the crim case would be tossed, and they don’t seem care about that so much as harassing and intimidating.

I was just browsing through the relevant CFRs. They do get some broad enforcement authority, but specifically can only detain and interrogate if they have reasonable suspicion the person committed an offense against the US or is in the US illegally. Hard to see how they could have reasonable…

Does ICE have any enforcement authority outside of immigration laws? If no, then what reasonable suspicion could they have to detain a U.S. citizen?

The article doesn’t add any more detail, certainly makes it sound like that one stop by the campaigner was the start and finish of her knowledge on Trump and his platform.

It can also be true that the churchgoers don’t agree with what ICE is doing or that their pastor is part of it, but that going to church is a very important aspect of their faith and life. Disrupting their service seems like it would serve to turn sympathizers the other way.

That is a very odd threat. If someone called and told me that about an employee I’m pretty sure my reaction would be “…ok?” And then continue like normal. I assume most employers would actually be the same, not exactly a fireable “offense”
