interesting footnote i found in this book from the 1870s: a Spanish author felt the need to point out that the basque language doesn't differentiate between a /b/ and a /v/ sound. Did spanish speakers still differentiate between the two at the end of the 19th century???

going through some 1910s Spanish-Basque newspapers for my thesis and "I don't know french that well" followed by an entire french letter really does feel like the belle époque equivalent of a northern european going "oh i don't speak english that well" followed by a question in perfect english
