I recall from my time with Redux that the new content was unfortunately pretty intrusive on the original experience, even when trying to ignore it. But I may also be more particular about that.

Not sure if you're particular about owning original carts, but the EZ-Flash Parallel DS flashcart recently released for $25, supporting all DS family systems with native functionality. I don't think price should have to preclude you from enjoying the original.

I also much prefer Kaneko's art for SJ to Doi's in Redux. I think SJ might be difficult to get into if you're a fan of how SMT4 feels and plays, unless you've played and enjoyed the SNES games. I'd recommend trying Digital Devil Saga before SJ if you want to try a fun and different twist on SMT.

I'm not a fan of SJ, but I think those who love it definitely recommend the original. Redux kinda cops out on the original themes and has one of the worst Atlus re-release add-on characters/additional stories in the franchise. However, Redux is definitely less challenging if you need that.

I've got the same problem. I recommend getting a pair of cheap red laser glasses online or at a hardware store and putting them on an hour before bedtime. Turn out your lights, and you can still use a screen without it keeping you from getting sleepy. I can lay down and read manga until I pass out.

The Saturn version of Silhouette Mirage has finally been translated into English! You should check that out, especially if you like other games by Treasure.
