A curious mind that is interested in many things. STEM graduate background with a passion for arts and literature.
Does anyone else experience a sense of health and well-being that begins about 24 hours after vaccination and lasts for several days? It doesn't seem to matter what type of vaccination, but I wonder if rising NAb titers aren't the cause.

My pathogen update for epi weeks 11-12 of 2025. The XEC COVID wave hasn't fully receded yet. Biobot shows that as of March 15, SARS2 wastewater levels haven't fallen to previous interwave gaps except for the Western region of the US.

@peacockflu.bsky.social — I've been hearing speculation that HPAI genes have already reassorted into current A(H3) strains that have been causing a surge in flu cases and hospitalizations. Is there any evidence for this? I don't know who else to ask.

The suggestion that Leon & his pubescent posse are showing up at Gov’t institutions & within hours identifying & responsibly cutting waste in specialties that he has no background or understanding is PREPOSTEROUS.

He’s not cutting waste- He’s destroying our institutions & stealing your info.

@peacockflu.bsky.social, does anyone know—or have a theory—why Clade 2.3.4.4b Genotype B3.13 (which infects cattle) and Clade 2.3.4.4b Genotype D1.1 (which infects birds) have such different pathologies when they infect humans? Any studies you're aware of would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

In another time and place, Brian Thompson would be the technocrat, high up in the regime—who never got his hands dirty—but enabled greater efficiency in the concentration camps. I'm sure he was otherwise a very nice guy and fun at cocktail parties.

2-1/ COVID update for epi week 2 of 2024. I waited until week 2 to update in hopes that the current wave would've resolved itself by now, but it hasn't—and it'll take me the whole weekend to complete. BTW a nice epi week calendar here (ignore the bug)…

An audio version of the smashing-hit article 'Why we didn't get a malaria vaccine sooner' is now available – I just finished recording it!

Why we didn't get a malaria vaccine sooner (audio recording)
Hundreds of thousands of people die from malaria each year, but it took 141 years to develop a vaccine for it. Advance market commitments could speed things up next time. This is an audio recording of...

Implications for risk "rules of thumb":

- For short exposures, halving exposure time halves risk; risk of fleeting (<1 min) exposures is probably very low (hard to measure)

- Very long exposures still increase risk, worth limiting exposure even for e.g. co-habitants

49-1/ Summary of COVID trends as of epidemiological weeks 48 & 49.

Here we go again. Biobot shows our wastewater numbers are climbing quickly, indicating a rapid spread of the virus (probably all due to JN.1). NE and Midwest showing the largest increases.

45-1/ Summary of COVID trends as of Epidemiological Weeks 44-45. Common wisdom says COVID transmission will increase over the holidays. Past 3 years, rates were already increasing before Thanksgiving week. If true, the signal is difficult to parse from the macro data.

45-1/ Summary of COVID trends as of Epidemiological Weeks 44-45. Covid noogies for me! I was expecting the current wave to continue to recede in an uneven step-down manner, but it looks like we’ve got a secondary wavelet caused by HV.1.
