A board could appoint 50% women; would legally not be allowed to ask if they were trans; and thus not have met their equality duty, even though they could never know!
The judgement reads: "The issue here is only whether the appointment of a trans woman who has a GRC counts as the appointment of a woman and so counts towards achieving the goal set in the gender representation objective, namely that the board has 50% of non-executive members who are women. In our judgment it does not."

Read the actual specific verdict on the issue in question.

How would anyone know that they hadn't appointed 50% women unless trans women are forced to out themselves?!?

The actual verdict on the specific issue is genuinely incoherent.

There's also the wild claim that puberty blockers don't give time to think because most go on to take cross-sex hormones. Which makes no sense at all, not even on the face of it.
