Bookshelf inessential.

(I wanted to get the new Oxford translations of Proust because the timing aligned - but I guess by Moncrieff I'm reading the same Proust every famous French-illiterate writer did !🫠)

"Defeated by reality, by Spain, don Quixote died in 1614 in the town of his birth. He was survived only a short time by Miguel de Cervantes."

First chapter of a Mishima novel and a 13 y/o boy is perving at his mother through a peephole.

In the boy's POV, his mother's lover's penis is described as a 'lustrous temple tower [soaring] triumphantly erect'.

Im fucking dying; certified Yukio Mishima moment for sure.

Snow Country, Kawabata. Lingered with me beyond the pages more than I first thought upon the conclusion of the novel/novella.

Rather lovely; the popular contemporary criticism of Japanese male writers and their inability to write women as normal human beings very much applies.

"The point of Lolita is not that beautiful language can mask complicity in moral evil [a moral evil which is obvious to Nabokov], rather the point is that even moral vileness can be in service of beautiful sentences. "

Short impression of Woolf's To The Lighthouse I wrote a while back; I had then claimed the novel to be amongst my favourites; if I commit to a #booksky 💙📚 presence it is only right that I post it here.

Great article. I had takes on brodernism unposted cus I left twt but this article succintly nails the (many) problems with the piece.

Fundamentally, it is a piece designed for controversy and virality -- which is itself arguably *the* existential issue with lit-criticism in a socmed-culture.

I first flipped through this book in a secondhand bookstore and -- the 'Events Of 1915' got a morbid chuckle out of me lmao. Things sure did happen in 1915.

Alev Scott, Ottoman Odyssey, 2018.

The new Pope was born Robert Prevost.

Robert Prevost is an anagram for Pervert Robots. Or Robot Perverts if you would prefer. Ole' Pope Robot Perverts: a fitting pick for our times.
