JUST IN: @govcox on redistricting ruling: “The Utah Constitution clearly states that it is the responsibility of the Legislature to divide the state into congressional districts. While I respect the Court’s role in our system, no judge, and certainly no advocacy group, can usurp that constitutional authority. For this reason, I fully support the Legislature appealing the Court’s decision.”

SALT LAKE CITY – President J. Stuart Adams and Speaker Mike Schultz release the following statement: “Late last night, a single unelected judge set aside the Utah Constitution and the voice of Utah voters, selecting a map drawn behind closed doors by out-of-state advocacy groups. The process the judge chose denied the people of Utah a chance to see it, to weigh in, or to be heard. The judge disregarded the Constitution to select a clearly gerrymandered map. This is not fair to Utahns and is deeply disappointing. “This isn’t how government should work. Our system depends on transparency, accountability, and respect for the roles defined in our Constitution. Judges are meant to uphold the law as written, not rewrite it to serve political ends. Nothing in Utah’s Constitution gives the courts authority to impose maps designed by private groups. “Redistricting is not a courtroom exercise; it is a constitutional duty entrusted to the Legislature, the body directly elected and accountable to Utahns. When that process is overridden, it weakens the voice of every Utahn. Utahns deserve leaders who will defend their voice, their Constitution, and the balance of powers that make our system work. This moment calls for unity and resolve, to stand together, but firmly, in defense of the principles that make Utah strong and the Republic process we all depend on.”

Following the Senate’s action, Senator Curtis issued the following statement: “I commend the Senate’s action to end the shutdown that has cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars and negatively impacted the lives of millions of Americans. Utahns deserve far better from Washington. “Over the past 51 years, Congress has managed to pass a proper budget only four times. That is completely unacceptable. It is time to reform the process and restore fiscal responsibility. “I am committed to working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to create a long-term solution that prevents either party from holding the government—and the American people—hostage again.”

Hildale Mayor Donia Jessop looks to have won another term. Her original election was historic as the first ex-FLDS and woman mayor and she and a more secular council have tried hard to shed the community's old image. Voters appear to support that. #utpol #Utah

It's the tax everyone LIKES to pay! Voters across Utah have — from what I've seen so far — approved extensions of their communities' recreation, arts and parks (RAP) tax.

I'm also watching Prop. 13 in Grand County, a 0.5% sales tax hike to cover EMS in tourism/outdoor heavy Moab. #utpol #Utah

Midvale and Salt Lake City held ranked choice elections (the last as the legislature is not extending the pilot project in Utah) and for most of the races? It was a first round, winner take all. Except SLC Council District 3 and you see where the votes went... #utpol #Utah

For the most part, incumbent mayors did well in re-election bids. I noted this in West Valley City, Herriman, Draper, Sandy, South Salt Lake.
