I walked passed the National Covid Memorial Wall earlier. There is not a day that goes by when I don't think about the lost lives and potential, and the deep sadness and illness that many still face.

As someone who had the opportunity to make a small contribution to the public health policy response to the pandemic, I am clear that the government was too slow to act.

I think there was an ideological aversion to decisive action - Ministers were too slow to get the science.

Holding elected office (as those of us who have been there know) is tough. No doubt even more so for those with no political experience and a head full of assumptions that turn out to be untrue or at best incomplete.

Serving is a serious matter.
