While both male and female Egyptian Geese can hiss and honk, the male typically makes a hoarse, subdued quack or a "steam engine-like" call, while the female has a much louder, more raucous honk that she uses frequently, especially when agitated 🪶

When a male Black-tailed Skimmer first emerges, it looks remarkably similar to a female (pictured)💡
However, as it matures, its abdomen develops a powdery pale blue coloration, with a darker tip to the abdomen that gives it its "black-tailed" name🐉🪰

Carrion Crows are known to engage in "anting," a behaviour where they allow ants to crawl on their feathers or even rub ants directly onto their plumage
While the exact reason is still debated, it's thought that the ants' formic acid helps rid the crow of parasites 🪶

Common Whitethroats undertake impressive long-distance migrations🛫
They travel thousands of kilometres from their breeding grounds in Europe & Asia all the way to their wintering grounds in tropical Africa, south of the Sahara🪶

A Nutria, often living in marshy or wetland areas, is quite the prolific reproducer📈
Unlike some other mammals, they can actually have up to three separate litters within a single year, ranging in size from one to thirteen new-borns💡

The appearance of those puffy, white clouds, often called cumulus clouds, indicates rising air currents. These currents are caused by uneven heating of the Earth's surface by the sun☀️
So, in a way, the sunshine is directly responsible for those lovely clouds☁️

When threatened, Garden Snails (Helix Aspersa Aspersa) produce a foamy mucus. This bubbly secretion is believed to deter predators, like ants, acting as a unique defensive tactic beyond simply withdrawing into their shells🐌

Did you know that Canada Geese have very strong family bonds & often mate for life?♾️
Their young, called goslings, stay with their parents for almost a full year, learning important survival skills before venturing out on their own 🪶

Probably the most perfect Dandelion I've seen yet🌼
Did you know that the name "dandelion" comes from the French phrase "dent de lion", which means "lion's tooth"? This refers to the jagged, tooth-like edges of the dandelion's leaves💡

The Saarland region has a rich history of coal mining & steel production, explaining the industrial features on the horizon⚒️
However, due to environmental efforts & the decline of these industries, the region has seen a return of lush forests & biodiversity 🌳🐦

While simple threaded fasteners were used by the Romans, the production & standardization of nuts & bolts as we know them today began during the Industrial Revolution in the late 18th & 19th centuries.
Before, threaded fasteners were often custom-made by blacksmiths.

In the 20th century, as power grids expanded, a debate about the aesthetics of pylons was sparked (see what I did there?).
Some saw them as symbols of progress, others as eyesores. This led to design contests for pylons that were efficient and visually appealing⚡

Mosses, like the lush green ones growing on the decaying stump (foreground), were among the first plants to colonise land >400 million years ago💡
They played a crucial role in creating the soil that allowed larger, more complex plants to thrive🌳

Did you know that each cat's nose print is as unique as a human fingerprint?🙀
The intricate pattern of ridges & bumps on their rhinarium is distinct to each individual cat, making it a potential way for identification, though it's not commonly used.

Carrion Crows are quite good at problem-solving💡
For example, some Carrion Crows have been seen dropping nuts onto roads & waiting for cars to crack them open, demonstrating a learned behaviour & an understanding of cause & effect 🪶

The Field Maple (foreground) is known for its tolerance to air pollution & compacted soil🌳
This is why it was chosen as Germany's "Tree of the Year" in 2015, highlighting its adaptability to human-dominated landscapes, like the town we see nestled in the greenery.

Despite their intimidating size & reputation, European Hornets are less aggressive towards humans than common wasps or even honeybees, especially when away from their nest 🪹
They are more interested in hunting other insects to feed their larvae

In the fairy tale "Rapunzel" by the Brothers Grimm, the name "Rapunzel" actually refers to this plant.
It is mentioned that Rapunzel's mother craved the plant so much while pregnant, that her father went to steal it from a sorceress's garden 🧙‍♀️

Each male of the Common Blackbird often has his own repertoire of song phrases, and they can even mimic sounds they hear in their environment.
So, that blackbird you see might be serenading you with his own unique tune! 🎶🪶

The caterpillars of the Common Blue Butterfly have a special relationship with ants. They can secrete a sugary substance that ants love, so the ants will actually protect the caterpillars from predators in exchange for this sweet treat 🍬

Did you know that some dung beetles use the Milky Way to navigate while rolling their dung balls?🌌
While the beetle's compound eyes are likely too weak to see individual stars, it uses the light of the Milky Way to keep on a straight course🔆✨

Sth different from my wildlife posts, but I still got an photograph-related fun fact for you:
Amsterdam has over 165 canals, which aren't just for show. They were originally dug to drain the city's marshy land & were crucial for transport & trade!

Speaking of 'fact', here's a fun one: Pigeons were the first birds domesticated by humans, even the Mesopotamians kept them!

One of my very first shots 📸🥳
Despite their name, Mute Swans aren't totally silent. They communicate with snorts, hisses, and soft grunts, especially between parents and cygnets. They just lack complex songs. Did you know? 🦢
